Rory McIlroy shot another one of the best at the World Tour Championship
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The path is clear for Rory McIlroy to win the year-long Tour to Dubai title and be crowned the best player on the European Tour for the sixth time.
He is in contention for the season-ending World Tour Championship.
McIlroy hit the fairway wood from 265 yards to 15 feet on No. 18 and birdied his second round on Friday, a 3-under 69 that left the Northern Irishman ranked No. by Antoine Rozner of France (65) at 9-under par.
McIlroy was tied with Tyrrell Hatton (69) for second place in the tournament but his year-long lead in the Race to Dubai looks unassailable.
Thriston Lawrence is the only player who can stop McIlroy from winning that title — and to do that he needs a win at Jumeirah Golf Estates. That proved unlikely, as 71 left Lawrence tied for week nine without a lead at halftime.
Rozner, ranked No. 154, was a surprise leader after making six birdies in eight holes from No.
He is one of the players looking for a top finish to secure one of the 10 PGA Tour cards that will be awarded next season.
