Trump announces Gov. North Dakota Doug Burgum as secretary of the Department of the Interior

President-elect Trump teased a “big” announcement Thursday night, sharing that North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum will lead the Department of the Interior.

“He will be announced [Friday]… I’m looking forward to making an official announcement, although this is a really big announcement right now, actually,” Trump said during a speech at the America First Policy Institute’s Mar-a-Lago event on Thursday. “He will lead the organization of the Ministry of the Interior, and he will be very good.”

“We will reduce waste, fraud and inefficiency,” Trump said. “We will clean up the corrupt, broken and failed officials. And we will stop the sexual mutilation of children. We will stop it because it is time.”

Burgum, the former CEO of a multi-million dollar software company turned two-term governor, launched a bid for the White House in June 2023.

Burgum made energy and natural resources a key part of his campaign for the GOP nomination.

After running in the first two GOP presidential debates, Burgum failed to win a third contest, last fall, and dropped out of the race for the White House last December. A month later, he appeared in Iowa with Trump and endorsed the former president for the GOP nomination, days before the nation’s first caucuses.

Burgum has been a high-profile advocate for the former president, appearing on the campaign trail and in high-profile cases on Trump’s behalf.

He was considered as Trump’s running mate this past summer before Sen. JD Vance of Ohio has been nominated as vice president of the Republican Party.

The governor added that Trump’s victory “means that America will rule with power.”

“America is going to be a key force in every negotiation we do around the world,” he said.
