Biden came down behind the APEC family photo with Xi Jinping at the front

President Biden stood in the back corner of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) family photo on Saturday, as other prominent world leaders were seen front and center.

Chinese Prime Minister Xi Jinping is placed in the front center of the photo, next to Peru’s president Dina Boluarte. Boluarte hosted world leaders in Lima for this year’s APEC summit.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was seen in the foreground to Xi’s right, along with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Photos show Biden smiling and laughing with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra as a family photo is taken. This weekend, Biden held closed-door meetings with various leaders, including Boluarte and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

The placement of the image of Biden, who leaves office in January, is from where American leaders usually stand. Last year, Biden was in the middle of the 2023 APEC family photo, which was held in San Francisco. Trudeau and Xi were to the right of Biden.

In 2017, former President Trump stood front and center in that year’s APEC family portrait, along with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

The conference came nearly two weeks after the 2024 presidential election, in which Vice President Harris was defeated by Trump in a landslide victory. Biden met with the Republican leader this week to discuss the transition process.

“I’m looking forward to… having a smooth transition. We’re going to do everything we can to make sure you get the housing you need,” the Democratic president said to Trump during the meeting.
