Tennis meets green: The Nitto ATP Finals highlights sustainability with The Green Wall experience

Sustainability was also on display at this year’s Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.

At the heart of the Nitto ATP Finals Fan Village, fans are greeted by The Green Wall, a luxurious installation created by Nitto, the ATP and the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation (FITP). Decorated with living plants, it is more than just a beautiful background; An educational experience where fans can explore Nitto’s efforts to reduce CO2 emissions and promote environmental responsibility.

This installation turns the Fan Village into a hub of awareness, making sustainability as much a part of the event as tennis itself.

There are also activities in the area sponsored by Nitto to help educate visitors about sustainability.

Visitors can learn about CO2 and the effects of reducing CO2 while playing a light game that simulates collecting CO2, and a large wall with many letters showing CO2 in the city of Turin, using a color pen and stickers, many visitors enjoyed the “Wall of Art” where they could erase the letters of -CO2 while making them colorful.

“It’s great fun, and it’s an opportunity for my son to learn about the importance of sustainability,” Bragagnolo said. “These activities, along with awards, make it easy for fans of all ages to engage with one of the most pressing issues of our time, creating a learning experience that’s as playful as it is educational.”

The Green Wall is not just for display during the tournament. It is a lasting symbol of commitment. After the event, it will be relocated to another location in Turin, in line with the city’s sustainability objectives as one of the European Commission’s 100 ‘Mission Cities’ working towards climate neutrality by 2030. The move transforms the wall from a temporary installation into a permanent reminder of Turin’s commitment to the environment, linking the tournament’s impact to the city’s ongoing sustainability work.

James Brophy, a visitor from Great Britain, was impressed by the activation in the Fan Village.

“Sustainability is an important issue, so it’s great to see it highlighted at a big event like the Nitto ATP Finals,” said Brophy, who is a fan of Casper Ruud.

Nitto sets a strong example, showing how sporting events can be platforms for positive environmental change and inspiring fans to see tennis as more than just competition. It is a call to action for a greener future. In the fan village, there are also smart recycling bins in Nitto colors, which play a prominent role. The recycling bins automatically compress the waste that accumulates inside, using the stored electricity generated by the solar panels.

In 2023, the project planted 40 trees around the Inalpi Arena, added green roofs to select bus stops and donated 100,000 euros to the Municipality of Turin to continue sustainability initiatives.

These actions show how the tournament’s impact reaches beyond the courts, benefiting the local environment and promoting green infrastructure throughout the city.
