But have you ever wondered how much money the railways earn from waiting list ticket cancellations? According to an RTI reply, Indian railways have earned Rs 1,230 crore in the last three years alone from cancellation of waitlist tickets.
Waiting list and RAC ticket refund rules
If your train ticket is in RAC or waiting list after chart adjustment and you want to cancel your ticket 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time of the train. A cancellation fee of Rs 60 will be deducted from sleeper class. Whereas for AC category, Rs 65 will be deducted and the remaining amount will be refunded.

4 hour schedule for guaranteed tickets
If you have a matching ticket but unfortunately you have to cancel your trip. These are the rules you need to remember to get a refund for ticket cancellations. According to Indian railways rules, passengers with a confirmed ticket must cancel their tickets at least 4 hours before the scheduled departure of the train to be eligible for a refund. If the ticket is not canceled within this period, no refund will be given.
What are the rules for canceling confirmed tickets?
- 48 hours before the departure time of the train, a cancellation fee of Rs 60 per passenger in General Class (2S) will have to be paid.
- There will be a reduction of Rs 120 in sleeper class.
- A charge of Rs 180 will be deducted for AC and third AC seat car.
- There will be a reduction of Rs 200 for second AC, Rs 240 for first AC and higher category. GST will also apply.
- There is no GST on any sleeper class ticket, while Railways charges GST on AC class tickets.
How much will be deducted?
- The amount deducted for ticket cancellation depends on the type of ticket and the time of cancellation. The costs are as follows:
- In the case of confirmed train tickets, if the ticket is canceled between 48 hours and 12 hours before the scheduled departure time, up to 25% of the total price will be deducted.
- If you cancel the ticket between 4 hours and 12 hours before the scheduled departure time of the train, half of the ticket price ie 50% will be deducted.
- If you can’t cancel the ticket 4 hours before the scheduled departure time of the train, then you won’t get even a single cent as refund after that.
- Waiting list and RAC tickets must be canceled 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time of the train. Otherwise, you will not receive a refund.
