The plane crashes at the Pomona dragstrip, which conflicts with the NHRA championship finals

Two people were seriously injured Sunday after a single-engine plane crashed near the track at the In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip, where fans had gathered for the championship finale.

First responders on the job saw the plane flying down around 11:10 a.m. and called in the incident when the plane landed for an emergency landing, said Jonathan Torres, public information officer for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“They rushed to the scene,” said Torres. “They provided EMS and fire protection, too.”

Racing hosted by the National Hot Rod Assn. in the final which was expected to culminate on Sunday. Racing was temporarily suspended on Sunday afternoon as emergency services worked.

The plane crashed near the drag strip while trying to land at nearby Brackett Field Airport, according to a statement from NHRA officials. Four people aboard the plane were taken to local hospitals, including two with serious injuries, Torres said.

Torres said hazardous materials crews responded to contain the jet fuel spill. He said the plane damaged cars and trailers at the crash site.

The cause of the accident and other details about the incident were not yet available.
