Tomato prices in stores fell by 22% in improved goods

Tomato sales prices fell by 22.4 percent month-on-month in improved conditions across the country, the Department of Consumer Affairs said on Sunday.

The average selling price of tomatoes in India stood at Rs 52.35 per kg on November 14, down from Rs 67.50 per kg on October 14, according to an official statement.

Meanwhile, wholesale prices at Delhi’s Azadpur kamandi saw a sharp decline of nearly 50 percent to Rs 2,969 per quintal from Rs 5,883 per quintal, driven by increased arrivals.

Similar price adjustments have been reported in key markets like Pimpalgaon (Maharashtra), Madanapalle (Andhra Pradesh) and Kolar (Karnataka), the department said.

“While arrivals have come down at major tomato hubs in Madanapalle and Kolar, prices have come down due to seasonal supplies from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat filling supply gaps across the country,” it added.

Favorable weather conditions supported crop growth and smooth movement of procurement from farms to consumers, the statement said.

The country’s tomato production is expected to increase by 4 percent to 213.20 lakh tonnes in 2023-24.

While tomatoes are grown throughout the year, production varies seasonally in the regions. The Ministry said that bad weather and operational disruptions have a major impact on prices because the plant is highly vulnerable and perishable.

The price increase in October 2024 was due to heavy and prolonged rains in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

October and November are the main sowing times in the major producing regions. Regular market availability is maintained due to the crop’s short growing season and high yield, the department added.
