WATCH: Two New York State Patrol vehicles smashed by alleged drunk driver

Two New York State Police vehicles were hit by a suspected drunk driver while investigating another drunken driving incident.

According to a New York State Police release, Saturday, Nov. 16 around 12 am, two soldiers were hit by a 2004 gray Toyota RAV4 in a parking lot in Babylon, New York.

The accident occurred when two troopers were investigating a 2018 GMC Arcadia that crashed into a Department of Transportation mini-tower in the work area.

The authorities say that while they were still investigating another incident, Jaikaran Ramrookum, 72, hit the patrol cars.

The first vehicle was launched into the second, police said.

Photos released by state police showed the passengers and the SUV badly injured following the crash.

The police said that all the drivers were taken to nearby hospitals and treated for minor injuries. (New York State Police)

The soldiers rushed to help the civilians who were involved in the accident, after realizing that they had also received minor injuries.

“It was only after their adrenaline started to wear off that they realized their injuries,” the release said.

All those involved were taken to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

Ramrookum was charged with driving under the influence (Unclassified Misdemeanor).

New York State Police described the incident as “disappointing,” reminding motorists not to drink and drive.

“This situation is serious and sad, it is disappointing when people choose things that put the lives of others at risk, especially those who work to improve our roads and protect the public. This incident is a reminder to drivers not to stop driving. they are sober but to be aware of their surroundings, slow down and move forward,” said the release.

“It is important to remember that impaired driving is a serious crime that is 100% preventable and has dire consequences. It is important to make the right choices and avoid driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol,” the statement said.
