For the first time in 13 years, Anthony Kim moves up the Official World Golf Ranking and it is the biggest jump of his career.
Kim made the cut at this week’s Asian Tour International Series in Qatar and fired a final-round 71 to finish tied for 37th on Sunday.
That may sound like a lot, but it’s the first time Kim has been cut in her comeback that began earlier this year. Kim’s comeback was at the LIV Golf events, which not only have a cut but also do not offer OWGR points. The only known OWGR tournament that Kim entered this season was the International Series Macau event in March where he missed it.
Therefore, the .36805 points Kim earned in this week’s finish is the first OWGR points he has earned in 12 years, since his T42 finish at the 2012 Honda Classic. The 1.63 points he received that week actually wasn’t enough to keep him from falling from 115 to 116 in that week’s rankings, but while he gained more than a fifth of the points this week, the resulting jump was significant. .
When the new rankings come out on Monday, Kim will see his ranking, ranked No. 4,595 in the world entering this week, jump 2,281 spots from No. 2,314. Although his ranking is still a long way from 2008 when he reached No. 6 in the world after the Tour Championship, the jump is still one of the biggest in the history of the rankings.
During his many comebacks, Tiger Woods has been jumping up a few hundred after his first comeback events. Earlier this year, Nick Dunlap made the OWGR jump more than 4,000 spots when he won his first PGA Tour cut as a rookie, the biggest jump in rankings history.
For Kim, it’s the first time he’s improved his ranking since 2011, his last full season on the PGA Tour.
Kim disappeared from competitive golf for 11 years, developing a cult-like status before re-emerging in March of this year, signing a deal with LIV Golf as one of the league’s Wildcard players. The 39-year-old played in 11 LIV Golf events this season, finishing 36th out of a field of 54 at the LIV Golf Greenbrier. He didn’t score in a season-high.
The six-time PGA Tour winner’s contract with LIV is reportedly for one year.
