Weather Update: Heavy rains lash Tamil Nadu, ‘Fengal’ continues to move towards coast

Weather Update: Heavy rains accompanied by gusty winds lashed several parts of northern Tamil Nadu on Saturday, affecting the general situation, as Cyclone Fengal, expected to make landfall near Puducherry later in the day, continued towards the coast.
What started as intermittent rain in the coastal districts on the night of November 29, gradually led to water logging in several places and many residents of low-lying Madipakkam parked their vehicles on both sides of the nearby Velachery flyover.
Residents of the same vulnerable areas also park their cars in safe areas. Roads were empty and civil servants, police, firemen and rescuers were deployed to all vulnerable areas.
The flight schedule has been affected to some extent. Chennai Metro Rail said its services are running smoothly and has informed the public about parking facilities at certain stations which are prone to flooding. State-run transport companies operate skeletal services in and around Chennai.
Since the beach was so beautiful, the police closed the barricades preventing access to popular beaches including Marina and Mamallapuram. The milk supply of state-run Aavin was not affected and electricity continued to be normal in many areas.
The government had declared November 30 as a holiday for educational institutions and asked IT firms to make their employees work from home.
