Qantas is getting closer to receiving its first Airbus A321XLR, starting final assembly at the Airbus factory in Hamburg, Germany. The aircraft will be a milestone in the airline’s fleet renewal program, offering improved comfort and space and opening more non-stop routes.
Qantas has 28 A321XLRs on order
Qantas’ first Airbus A321XLR is scheduled for delivery in April 2025. It will be the first of 28 corporate orders, with an option to buy more. Over the next ten years, Qantas will replace its Boeing 737s with the new aircraft and become the first airline to use them in the Asia Pacific region. The Australian airline’s A321XLR promises more comfort, efficiency, and range.
Compared to the previous 737, the A321XLR includes 13% more seating capacity, with 20 business seats and 177 economy seats. It can fly about 3,000 km further than the outgoing aircraft, which has a range of 8,700 km. That will open up options for non-stop, domestic and international routes. The cabin, designed by David Caon, focuses on aesthetics and uses slightly open seats.
To commemorate Australia’s incredible travel opportunities, Qantas’ first A321XLR will be named “Great Ocean Road”.
Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson said: “These new aircraft are part of the largest domestic fleet renewal program in Qantas’ history, delivering significant improvements for customers and employment opportunities for our people. The A321XLR is an excellent aircraft, providing a comfortable flight for customers and the longer range will give us the opportunity to test more non-stop routes and use them more efficiently.”
