US Capitol Police arrested a House Democrat staffer after finding ammunition in a bag

US Capitol Police arrested a House Democrat on Thursday morning after allegedly trying to bring ammunition into the Cannon House Office Building.

The office of Rep. Joe Morelle – representative of the Congressional District of New York – told WROC that it is “fully willing to cooperate with the investigation.”

“At approximately 8:45 a.m., a housekeeper entered the Cannon House Office Building and checked her bag. USCP officers saw what appeared to be bullets on the x-ray,” Capitol Police told Fox News in a statement.

“After hand searching the bag, the police found four magazines of ammunition and eleven bullets. The employee told the police that he forgot that the ammunition was in the bag,” the statement continued.

Capitol Police say Michael Hopkins, 38, is facing charges of illegal possession of ammunition, including possession of a high-quality magazine.

Morelle’s office said Monday morning it was gathering more information about the arrest.

Morelle’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.
