American Airlines will not resume flights to Haiti in February as gang violence has escalated in the Caribbean nation.
A spokesperson for the airline told FOX Business in a statement that it will continue to evaluate the feasibility of returning to daily service from Miami International Airport to Haiti.
“American has made the difficult decision to suspend daily service between Miami (MIA) and Port-au-Prince, Haiti (PAP),” a spokesperson said. “We are proud of our more than 50-year commitment to Haiti and will continue to monitor the situation, assessing safety, security, and customer needs, in assessing the restoration of service. We will continue to reach out to affected customers to provide us with a full refund of their travel expenses.”
American Airlines was among several airlines – including Spirit and JetBlue – that have already temporarily suspended operations to and from Haiti after Spirit and JetBlue planes were hit by gunfire last month amid civil unrest.

“The security situation in Haiti is unpredictable and dangerous. Travel within Haiti is at your own risk,” said the US Embassy in Port-au-Prince last month. “The US government cannot guarantee your safety when going to airports, borders, or any onward travel. You should consider your own security situation before traveling anywhere in Haiti.”
