USDA recalls 167K pounds of tainted beef from a Mich. producer

Nov. 21 (UPI) — The Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection says it has recalled 167,000 pounds of beef due to concerns about possible E contamination. coli.

After Minnesota agriculture officials discovered a link between a group of people reporting the illness and beef from Detroit-based Wolverine Packing Co., FSIS worked with Michigan food officials to determine the cause, the statement said in a statement released Wednesday.

At least 15 people have reported getting sick after eating the facility’s ground beef, which has a Nov. use-by date. and lists the number “EST. 2574B” within the USDA inspection mark.

FSIS has posted a list of all products covered by the recall and photos of the packaging.

The recall includes more than 100 raw and frozen beef products sold under brand names including 1855 Beef, Davis Creek Meals, Farmer’s Choice, Heritage Restaurant Brands, and Cheney Brothers, Inc., in addition to Wolverine Packing Co.

The meat was shipped to grocery stores and restaurants across the country, and FSIS is concerned that some of the products may be stored in refrigerators and freezers. It advises establishments to “not serve these products,” and urges consumers to “safely prepare their raw meat products,” reminding people to cook all beef products to 160 degrees Fahrenheit to properly kill bacteria, including any E. coli that may be present.

In October, some McDonald’s Quarter Pounder hamburgers were linked to the same strain of E. coli, O157:H7, which was recalled on Thursday.

Symptoms of E. coli include dehydration, bloody diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fever, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They usually appear between two and eight days after eating contaminated food.
