Nothing strikes fear into the hearts of golfers like a baggage claim disaster. And at the Fort Myers airport a few weeks ago, disaster he may have been selling it short.
The story begins in Atlanta, where Fort Myers resident John Andre began his journey home with golf clubs. As most travelers do, Andre left his bag in the baggage claim with the unspoken hope that his crutches would make it home in one piece.
When he got back to the baggage claim in Fort Myers, he saw the bag going around the carousel and couldn’t stop laughing. The golf bag would have been destroyed in transit, it seemed as if it had been set up in the fire. The clubs around the baggage claim were not only mishandled, they were sung right into the travel bag, and later, the covers.
Indeed, the smoldering remains of the clubs were impressive, it took Andre a minute to realize the truth about the truth: his.
As Andre quickly realized, his crutches had been dragged down, and the protective cover of his travel bag had finally broken. As his bare sticks hit the concrete, they ignited, leading to a massive fire that destroyed all of his possessions.
Shortly after his clubs were returned to him, Andre filed a claim with Delta for about $4,000 to cover his broken equipment. It was initially denied, leading Andre to contact his local news station, WKRC, about the incident.
Thankfully, as the news station’s coverage wrapped, Andre received a call from Delta. The airline chose to make amends, agreeing to refund $4,000 for Andre to repair his golf clubs and bag.
The situation was resolved, albeit after much frustration. Andre was left with a new set of golf clubs to join his burnt old set, and the rest of us have a newfound fear of joining the joy of air travel.
