A Nebraska city council member explains the impact of illegal immigration on the community

Fremont, Nebraska City Council member Paul Von Behren shared with Fox & Friends First on Wednesday how the effects of illegal immigration have impacted his community. While it is far from the southern border, Fremont is dealing with an influx of immigrants, especially those who work in the city’s meat processing plants.
“I think the biggest drag is the cheap labor they provide. They’re basically less educated, less skilled than the average American worker. We’re primarily a meat processing town, so generally our businesses like to have them here to provide us. Cheap labor, easily,” said Von Behren.

Von Behren also discussed the impact of illegal immigration on crime in Fremont.
“According to Fremont, from a public safety perspective, there have been at least three arrests for alleged child rape,” said a city council member. “Even in our traffic statistics, our DUIs, our licenses, no insurance, 75 percent of those were illegal.”
“We’re seeing a lot of pressure, frankly, on our schools and public safety and it’s actually starting to raise taxes,” he continued.
“Direct costs are difficult [to quantify] but i [increase in] taxes are mainly from all the housing pressure they put on us,” said Von Behren, referring to the increase in illegal immigration in Fremont. In the last 5 years, those taxes have increased by 25 percent.”

Von Behren was also asked about President-elect Trump’s plans to deport illegal immigrants if he takes office.
“It’s not about supporting deportation,” Von Behren said. “It’s a matter of upholding federal law. These people broke federal law with their first step to enter this nation illegally. It doesn’t matter or race, it doesn’t matter or anything else, they are here illegally and anyone here illegally deserves to be deported.”
A few weeks before Trump took office on Jan. 20, some voters in states like New York have been polled about impeachment plans for the president-elect.
A Siena College New York State Poll found that 54% of respondents said the state should support any efforts by the Trump administration to deport illegal immigrants in the state, compared to 35% of respondents who opposed the plans.
