The Netflix movie ‘Mary’ puts the spotlight on the Mother of God

The new Netflix movie “Mary” tells the story of the woman who would be known as Theotokos, Blessed Mother, Queen of Heaven and others.

The film, directed by DJ Caruso, stars Noah Cohen as Mary and Anthony Hopkins as King Herod. It reached number 1 on the Netflix charts shortly after its release on December 6th.

But who is Mary – and why is she so important during Advent and Christmas?

What does the Bible say about him?

Mary’s special position is evident at the beginning of Luke’s Gospel. Luke 1:28 reads as follows: “He came to him and said: ‘Bayeth, you are full of grace, the Lord is with you!'”

This line is part of the story of the Annunciation, when the Virgin Mary was told by the archangel Gabriel that she would conceive and give birth to the Messiah, Jesus.

Mary would give her consent to this in Luke 1:38, saying, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.”

The phrase “full of grace” means that Mary was not like others who were still defiled by original sin.

Catholics believe that Mary was conceived as pure, without sin.
