The Netflix movie ‘Mary’ puts the spotlight on the Mother of God

The new Netflix movie “Mary” tells the story of the woman who would be known as Theotokos, Blessed Mother, Queen of Heaven and others.

The film, directed by DJ Caruso, stars Noah Cohen as Mary and Anthony Hopkins as King Herod. It reached number 1 on the Netflix charts shortly after its release on December 6th.

But who is Mary – and why is she so important during Advent and Christmas?

What does the Bible say about him?

Mary’s special position is evident at the beginning of Luke’s Gospel. Luke 1:28 reads as follows: “He came to him and said: ‘Bayeth, you are full of grace, the Lord is with you!'”

This line is part of the story of the Annunciation, when the Virgin Mary was told by the archangel Gabriel that she would conceive and give birth to the Messiah, Jesus.

Mary would give her consent to this in Luke 1:38, saying, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.”

The phrase “full of grace” means that Mary was not like others who were still defiled by original sin.

Catholics believe that Mary was conceived as pure, without sin.

“If he is completely inhabited by God, there is no room for sin in him.

Speaking about this verse in 2017, Pope Francis said that the phrase “full of grace” means that “Mary is full of God’s presence.”

This, Pope Francis said, “is a strange thing because everything in the world, sadly, is contaminated by evil. Each of us, looking inside us, sees the dark side. Even the greatest saints were sinners and all that is real, even the most. good things, corrupted by evil: everything , without Mary.

He added that Mary “is the only ‘evergreen’ in humanity, the only one who is not defiled, who was created flawless to fully accept her ‘yes’, God who came to earth to start a new history.”

HERE’S WHY MARY, THE MOTHER OF GOD, IS SUCH AN IMPORTANT FIGURE DURING ADVENT

The importance of Mary’s role in this story and in the season of Advent cannot be underestimated, Mark Miravalle told Fox News Digital in 2023.

“From the manger to postage stamps, from Christmas cards to Advent carols, the image of the Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus Christ appears everywhere in time Advent season,” said Miravalle.

“Therefore, we believe that a human woman gave human nature to the second Person of the Trinity by the power of the Holy Spirit, so that Jesus Christ, God and man, could redeem the world,” he said.

Advent, a time of spiritual preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ, “appropriately honors the woman’s participation in God’s loving plan to bring humanity its Savior,” Miravalle said.

“How powerfully this demonstrates God’s deep respect for human dignity, our free cooperation in his divine plan of salvation and the special dignity of woman,” he said.

Although Mary is revered in some Christian denominations, there is no “competition” between her and her son, Jesus, Miravelle said.

“There is no competition between the divine Jesus and the human Mary, but rather the unity of the heart of the son and the mother in obeying the plan of the Father in Heaven, which led to the glorious birth and the final victory of the Savior of the world,” he said. .
