Alex Michelsen erased all doubt on Wednesday to secure his first victory at the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF.
The American second seed defeated Nishesh Basavareddy 2-4, 4-3(5), 4-3(4), 4-2 in a high-octane battle in Jeddah. After losing all three round robin matches in his debut in 2023, Michelsen showed resilience in a one-hour, 50-minute victory to go 1-0 in the Red Group.
The match seemed to be moving towards Basavaraddy at the end of the third set, helped a lot by Michelsen’s missed volley. However, the 20-year-old has recovered to drop four points from 40/0 down to close the break in the lead.
Basavareddy, who announced this month his decision to become champion, will be looking for a first win at the new event on Thursday. The 19-year-old will face Shang Juncheng, who lost to sixth-ranked Luca Van Assche in the Red Group opener.
