Lipcius returns to the AL Central, where he has spent most of his career. The Tigers selected him in the third round of the 2019 draft. The Tennessee product reached the majors with Detroit at the end of the ’23 campaign. He hit .286/.342/.400 in a 13-game sample. The Tigers removed him from the 40-man roster last winter. They traded him to the Dodgers, who released him just before Opening Day.
The hard-hitting Lipcius spent the entire season with the Dodgers’ senior organization in Oklahoma City. He had a solid season, hitting 25 homers with a .271/.351/.458 slash while appearing in 140 games. He drew feet at a solid 10.7% clip while striking out a league average of 22.8%. The Dodgers never called him up, so he opted for major league free agency at the end of the season.
While Lipcius has limited MLB experience, he is a logical depth target for the White Sox. He owns a .276/.360/.444 slash line over 1200 Triple-A plate appearances. Lipcius doesn’t connect with heavy hitting — this year’s home run has certainly been helped by playing in the Pacific Coast League — but he has good hitting discipline. A third baseman in college and mostly in Detroit’s system, he mostly played first base with OKC. He has some experience in second place as well.
Sox tender Andrew Vaughn arbitration contract, which means he will likely remain a first baseman. Miguel Vargas he is a third baseman projected, although he did not hit at all after coming out of the Dodgers in Michael Kopech/Erick Fedde agreement deadline. Glove-first utilityman Lenny Sosa he might first look for the keystone. There is a distinct possibility that Lipcius will work his way into the mix during Spring Training.
