Five highway projects aimed at addressing traffic problems in Manatee County are reaching new milestones by 2025, including the Moccasin Wallow and Lena highway projects.

The Moccasin Wallow Road road mileage project is nearing completion as 2024 draws to a close.

The project to widen four sections of Moccasin Wallow Road from two to four lanes continues to move forward. The first segment, which stretches from US 301 to 115th Avenue East, broke ground in January 2023 and is scheduled to be completed before the end of the year. It includes a 12-foot multi-use path, a 6-foot sidewalk and 7-foot wide bike lanes on each side.

Crews broke ground on the second phase of the project this month and expect to finish construction by mid-2026. A 1.6 mile section from 115th Avenue East to Bay Winds Parkway. All segments are designed with the same features as the first segment of the project, including four lanes and pedestrian improvements.

Construction of the third section of the project, which is a 1.8 kilometer stretch between Bayside Community Church and Buffalo Road, is expected to begin in 2025 and be completed in early 2027.

A quarter of the project, a 1.9-mile stretch between Gillette Drive and US 41, is nearing completion. The packing operations started on Dec. 16, and is expected to be completed before the end of the year.

Construction work to widen Lena Road from SR 70 to SR 64 will break ground in early January. The road will have two lanes, pedestrian improvements, and a roundabout at 44th Avenue E and Musgrave Ranch Road. SR 64 and 54th Drive East will also be realigned to accommodate the new road. It is estimated to cost about $31.87 million to complete.

Manatee County held a public hearing in December on a project that would widen Fort Hamer Road from two to four lanes between Upper Manatee River Road and US 301. The project spans 3.8 miles and may include a designated interactive path to improve bicycling and pedestrian travel. . .
