Labor strikes become a major problem in 2024. From shipyard workers to Starbucks baristas, tens of thousands of workers have walked off their jobs in conflict with management.
Most of the strikes were localized, not disrupting all operations, but one strike could have caused supply chain problems that could have impacted the holiday season and beyond.

Port Workers Strike
On October 1, approximately 47,000 dock workers from the International Longshoreman’s Association went on strike, affecting 36 ports on the Gulf and Eastern coasts. It was the first strike in Eastern and Gulf ports since 1977.
Another analysis by JP Morgan said the strike could cost the US economy up to $5 billion a day.
The strike was called off after two days, when the union and employers reached a conditional offer of a 62% wage increase. However, the strike stoppage and extension of the main contract runs until January 15, 2025, five days before President-Elect Trump takes the oath of office. Presidents Biden and Trump have spoken of their support for white-collar workers and their demands for union wages and reduced automation.

Boeing Machinists strike
On September 13, 2024, more than 33,000 machinists represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers went on strike following a 25% pay cut over four years. It was the first work stoppage at Boeing since 2008. Workers want higher wages, and better retirement benefits. The strike resulted in the grounding of Boeing aircraft models including the 737, 772, and 767, as well as their military counterparts. The strike has caused problems with delivery systems and losses are estimated at about $1 billion a month.

The strike was resolved and ended on November 4, 2024. 59% of members voted to accept a new contract offer that increased wages by 38% over four years, and provided enhanced 401(k) contributions. In addition to resolving the strike, Boeing said the strike caused financial and operational problems that caused the company to announce 17,000 layoffs.
Starbucks Workers Strike
In late December, more than 5,000 Starbucks workers at more than 300 US stores went on strike over unresolved disputes over wages, staffing, and schedules.
That includes about 10,000 workers at stores in the following cities:
- Los Angeles, California
- Chicago, Illinois
- Seattle, Washington
- New York, New York
- Boston, Massachusetts
- Dallas, Texas
- Portland, Oregon
- Columbus, Ohio
- Denver, Colorado
- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
The union accused Starbucks of failing to honor a commitment made ten months ago to finalize a labor agreement by the end of 2024.

The company said it offers a competitive wage of more than $18 an hour and “excellent benefits,” including health care, free college tuitionpaid family leave and company stock grants.
“No other retailer offers this type of comprehensive benefits package,” Kelly wrote. “Workers United’s proposals call for the minimum hourly wage to be increased by 64%, and by 77% over the course of a three-year contract. These proposals are unsustainable, especially when the investments we make regularly reach our value. The benefits package is a symbol of what sets us apart as an employer – and, what makes us proud to work at Starbucks.
