Airport service workers at the Charlotte, North Carolina Airport during Thanksgiving week

Workers at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) in Charlotte, North Carolina, went on strike Monday morning after a vote in favor of the measure, which comes as the Transportation Security Administration says there could be record Thanksgiving travel this year.
Local station WSOC-TV said the strike involves workers employed by American Airlines contractors ABM and Prospect Airport Services, who are unhappy about “unfair labor practices and poverty wages.”

Airport service workers include cabin cleaners, ramp workers, restroom workers, wheelchair operators and garbage truck drivers.
Most of those workers earn as little as $12.50 an hour, which is considered the minimum wage for a single person without children in Charlotte, Service Employees International Union (SEIU) officials told ABC News.

“Airport workers make holiday travel possible by keeping airports safe, clean and functional,” SEIU said. “Despite their important role in the profits of large corporations, many airline service workers must work two to three jobs to survive.”

The strike began at 5 a.m. Monday and is expected to continue through Thanksgiving week when the airport will have record traffic, according to airport officials. Between Nov. 21 and Dec. 2, the airport predicts that approximately 1.02 million passengers will depart from CLT – an increase of 7% from 2023.

In addition to walking off the job on Monday morning, striking workers will also hold a rally at 11am and a 1pm “Strikesgiving” lunch.
