BREAKINGCONTINUATION,
The joint investigative unit is seeking an arrest warrant for the deposed president for the summary imposition of martial law.
South Korean authorities have requested an arrest warrant for suspended President Yoon Suk-yeol for his temporary declaration of martial law.
South Korea’s Joint Investigation Headquarters on Monday said it wanted Yoon arrested on charges of treason and abuse of power after the ousted leader ignored three summonses to appear for questioning.
The court will decide whether to issue a warrant to pursue the application.
Yoon’s brief imposition of martial law on December 3 stunned South Korea, plunging the East Asian country into its worst political crisis in decades.
Yoon, who was the country’s chief prosecutor before entering politics, has been suspended from his post since December 14, when Parliament voted to remove him from office by a vote of 204-85.
Korea’s Constitutional Court is debating whether to uphold a motion to impeach and remove Yoon from office, a process that could take up to six months.
At its first hearing on Friday, the court rejected a request by Yoon’s lawyers to delay the trial so the South Korean leader could better prepare his case.
