The government press office in Gaza said on Thursday that the Israeli military had carried out 34 airstrikes in the past 24 hours, resulting in the deaths of 71 people, including the enclave’s police chief and his deputy.

Israeli attacks have been reported in all conflict areas, including the so-called humanitarian zone in al-Mawasi and the refugee camp in northern Gaza, Jabalia, which has been attacked several times in recent days.

Palestinians were also killed and wounded during the attack on the neighborhoods of Gaza City, Remal and Shujayea, and the town of az-Zawayda, in the middle of the Gaza Strip.

Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), says that Israel’s deadly strike in the southern Gaza camp of al-Mawasi is another sign of ending the war.

“As the year begins, we have received reports of yet another attack on al-Mawasi in which dozens of people were killed, another reminder that there is no place for help let alone a safe place. [in Gaza],” he said. “Every day without the end of the war will bring another tragedy.”

Asked about the death toll on Thursday, an Israeli army spokesman said the army was following international law in fighting Gaza and was taking “possible precautions to minimize civilian casualties”.

Photojournalist Hassan al-Qishaoui was among those killed on Thursday. At least 217 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023.
