Which Teams Could Use Nolan Arenado?
The Cardinals were expected to trade Nolan Arenado now. President of baseball operations John Mozeliak suggested at the Winter Meetings that a deal could come together within a week or two. That would have been the case if the eight-time All-Star hadn’t exercised his no-trade clause to kill talk of a move to the Astros.
That leaves St. Louis in a bad situation. They publicly bought out Arenado. He seems willing to waive his no-trade clause in certain circumstances. For whatever reason, he wasn’t interested in going to Houston last month. Subsequent reporting indicated he might consider the Astros in the future, but the team moved on Christian Walker almost immediately and no longer need a cornerback. The Cardinals need to look elsewhere.
Will Sammon and Katie Woo of The Athletic reported this week that there has been little delay in the Arenado trade since talks in Houston broke down. The Yankees, long-time speculators, apparently aren’t as interested as it first appeared. YES Network’s Jack Curry pushed back on that idea last week. Jon Heyman also suggested on Bleacher Report’s live broadcast yesterday that the Yankees are more likely to stick with him. DJ LeMahieu rather than following Arenado.
Where does that leave Mozeliak and company?
