Many people are traveling far and wide in 2024. For many, the memories began during their journey aboard one of the thousands of airplanes that filled the world each day.
As 2024 draws to a close, here’s a roundup of the craziest aviation stories of the past year.
Faulty door
The immediate incident occurred on Jan. 5 where the plug door panel, which includes an additional emergency exit that only works on high-capacity aircraft, on an Alaska Airlines flight at 16,000 feet.
The flight was from Portland, Ore., and the panel caused a house distress. The pilots returned the plane safely to Portland with no serious injuries reported.

Video footage of the incident shows terrified passengers sitting as the wind was blowing in the plane due to the missing door. The incident led to lawsuits against the airline and reconsideration of Boeing, the plane’s manufacturer.
“Boeing takes responsibility for what happened,” Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun said at the time. “Regardless of the cause of the accident, an event like this should not happen on a plane leaving one of our factories. We have to be better. Our customers deserve better.”
The ordeal was caught on video
The plane operated by Brazilian airline The Voepass crashed in Sao Paulo state in August, killing all on board.
The fiery crash occurred in a residential area and killed more than 60 passengers and crew. The plane took off Cascavel, Brazilin the Parana region.

In December, passengers on an American Airlines flight from Dallas, Texas, to Minneapolis, Minnesota, experienced an unexpected surprise after a toilet water leak reached the hallway.

A Boeing 757-200 with 165 passengers arrived in Denver to “fix a problem with a slat” on one of its wings. The passengers were put on another flight and arrived later in the day in Boston.
Slats are movable panels on the front or leading edge of the wing and are used during takeoff and landing.

An unruly rider
A few days into 2024, an angry passenger allegedly assaulted a flight attendant before being ejected from the plane.
American Airlines Flight 1497 from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in Texas to Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport in Montana on Jan. 3 was diverted during the journey due to an unruly passenger.
The plane was forced to divert to Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport in Texas after Keith Edward Fagiana punched him repeatedly. The incident began after another passenger complained that Fagiana was kicking the seat, according to authorities.
After the flight attendant became involved, Fagiana allegedly became enraged and began punching an American Air Lines employee in the stomach.
JP Gallagher, Montana elected official, he told FOX 4 that his wife informed him about the traveler who was tired and furious.

“My wife started hitting me saying she knew, she made me pay attention that something was going on,” said Gallagher. “There was a drinks cart between us and the scene.
