Greenland’s Prime Minister wants independence following Trump’s comments about the acquisition
Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede recently announced his intentions for the island’s future, saying that taking major steps towards independence from Denmark is “necessary.”
Egede’s comments, following a December 22 tweet by President-elect Donald Trump’s Truth Social that advocated “ownership and control” of Greenland, focused on the basis of secession from Denmark.
“During the upcoming new elections, we must, in collaboration with the citizens, build these new measures, based on the foundations that have already been built,” said Egede. “It’s time for us to take a step and shape our future, and about who we will work closely with, and who we will trade with.”

Trump tried during his first term to buy mineral-rich, nationally important land in what he called a “major real estate deal,” Fox News Digital previously reported.
“Greenland is ours,” said Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede last week. “We are not selling and we will never be sold, we must not lose our long struggle for freedom.
American interest in Greenland began in the 1800s.

In 1867, the State Department considered buying both Greenland and Iceland, recognizing its strategic importance, Fox News reported. After World War IIDenmark rejected a $100 million offer from President Harry Truman for the island.
The land acquisition would mark the largest expansion of American territory in history, surpassing the Louisiana Purchase.
