Italian Prime Minister Meloni grants citizenship to Argentinian Milei in Rome
Argentine President Javier Milei was granted Italian citizenship by Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni during his visit to Rome, ANSA news agency reported.
Meloni received the liberal Argentine president at the Palazzo Chigi on Friday evening, which is the seat of the Italian government.
Milei is in Rome to attend a festival on Saturday organized by Meloni’s right-wing Brothers of Italy party.
This action was criticized by the opposition groups in the country as members of the law accused Meloni of doing what he wanted and he denied citizenship to children of Italian origin.
Milei’s Italian grandparents immigrated to Argentina in the early 20th century, giving Meloni reasons to grant her citizenship.
A few months ago, Milei said she was “75% Italian.”
Another Argentine with Italian roots is Pope Francis, who served as archbishop of Buenos Aires before ascending to the papacy.
