An Etihad Airways Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner canceled its departure from Melbourne Airport in Australia on Sunday due to technical reasons, according to reports.
Etihad Airways Flight EY461 from Melbourne to Abu Dhabi began accelerating on the runway at around 7pm before hitting the brakes and coming to a stop.
“The flight crew decided to suspend the flight for technical reasons, the flight was safely stopped on the runway and the emergency services attended as a precautionary measure,” Etihad Airways told the UAE state newspaper The National.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported that a passenger on the plane said two tires exploded after the fire broke out.

Etihad did not immediately respond to FOX Business’ request for comment.
A spokesperson for Melbourne Airport told FOX Business that emergency crews responded to the plane and applied fire-fighting foam as a precaution.
“All 289 passengers got off the plane safely and were taken to the airport yesterday evening,” said the ministry’s spokesperson.
Once the passengers were off the plane, it was towed onto the runway.
The incident forced officials to close the runway, until Monday morning local time after the road test was completed.
Etihad Airways told airport officials it was rebooking passengers on future flights.

Flight tracking website FlightRadar24.com shows the plane’s track from the airport to the runway, where data shows it reached about 170 kilometers per hour before stalling.
The plane manufacturer, Boeing, was hit by a crisis after a disaster in 2024 after a door flew off a Boeing 737 Max operated by Alaska Airlines.
Investigators found that four lock bolts were missing from the door plug of the Boeing 737 Max 9 plane when it took off from Portland, Oregon, on Jan. 5, 2024. A panel exploded at 16,000 feet, causing the cabin to depressurize. before the plane returned safely to Portland International Airport.

Boeing has also launched an investigation into whether some of the missing components on its undelivered 787 Dreamliners were installed incorrectly.
The Federal Aviation Administration told FOX Business last year that “Boeing disclosed that it may have improperly installed fuselage panels on 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

When reached for comment about the flight cancellation, Boeing declined all inquiries from FOX Business to Etihad Airways.
