German Chancellor Olaf Scholz says he is following what is happening in Austria, where right-wing chancellor Herbert Kickl is likely to be, “with great concern.”
Germany will hold elections on February 23 and its far-right party – the Alternative for Germany (AfD) – is expected to do well, although the main parties have refused to form a coalition with it.
In contrast, the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) has been given the mandate by the Austrian president to try to form a government after skipping the September elections. Attempts to form a coalition without the far right have failed.
Scholz said at a campaign event in Ludwigsfelde, near Berlin, that all parties in Austria that do not want to cooperate with the FPÖ were in the majority.
“Actually you have to do something about that. In this case, this is perhaps also a reminder that you should think carefully about what you do in advance – so that you don’t wake up with a hangover later, like a large number of Austrians. They certainly do right now,” he said.
