Even after the two-day nightmare, LA is belting out more days of fire weather

Much of Los Angeles County remains under a red flag warning, with forecasters warning of severe fire weather that will last Friday night.

Firefighters on Thursday were still battling the Palisades fire, which has burned more than 17,000 acres, and the Eaton fire, which has burned more than 10,000 acres in the Pasadena and Altadena areas.

But Los Angeles caught a break Wednesday, with firefighters able to contain a wildfire near Runyon Canyon above Hollywood on Wednesday, and keep a house fire in Studio City from spreading.

Unlike the catastrophic conditions on Tuesday night, where gusts of up to 100 mph were recorded, on Wednesday night, planes were able to make water drops on the Sunset fire. Officials initially ordered a mandatory evacuation of the Hollywood area – north of Hollywood Boulevard – but later lifted most of the evacuation orders.

Officials urged people to remain vigilant. On Thursday afternoon, winds are expected to drop back toward the Santa Ana airways in the region, with gusts from the northeast up to 40 mph, and isolated gusts up to 70 mph.

Winds should pick up Thursday evening into Friday morning, the weather service said.

The weather service warned that the mountains to the south could face changing winds, “which could lead to uncontrolled fire growth.”
