Kohl’s to close 27 ‘underperforming’ stores in April. Here is the list

Kohl’s plans to close 27 of its underperforming stores by April 2025 as part of a turnaround process for the struggling retailer.

The Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin-headquartered company — which has been pressured by declining sales — said all employees at the closing stores “have been notified, and offered a competitive severance package or the ability to apply for other open roles at Kohl’s,” according to Jan. 9 press release.

“While Kohl’s continues to believe in the health and strength of its profitable stores, these locations were underperforming stores,” the company said.

Also closing: an e-commerce fulfillment center in San Bernardino, California, which has been operating since 2010, is closing in May 2025. The company can now fill customer orders from store locations, without a fulfillment center, Kohl’s said.

“We always take these decisions very seriously,” said CEO Tom Kingsbury, who will step down as CEO on Jan. 15. “As we continue to build on our long-term growth plan, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams.”

Ashley Buchanan, former CEO of Michaels Companies, will take over as Kohl’s CEO on Jan. 15. Kingsbury will continue to be a consultant and serve on the company’s board through his retirement in May 2025.

Kohl’s said in November 2024 that it expects 2024 sales to fall 7% to 8%. A retailer reports its annual sales in February.

Kohl's has added Babies R Us stores, such as the one in Woodland Park, New Jersey, to its 200 stores to help offset declining sales in other categories.
