Dangerously cold wind for the MLK holiday weekend

ELMIRA, NY (WETM) – It’s a short chance to take down those Christmas decorations, before the Twin Tiers are hit with another blast of bitterly cold Arctic air. Otherwise another system is bringing a wintry mix of rain to the area this holiday weekend. Time to think about pets, pipes and people.

Lake effect snow showers continue this evening to our north and northwest. Before that our high and low temperatures on Friday will feel noticeably warmer and closer to normal. This short dance with warm air will also interrupt the lake effect ice machine at least for a while. Then it gets very cold. It’s actually dangerously cold, especially at night.

By the end of the day on Monday, despite the wind chill, we will stop to soak in sub-zero temperatures. Then add a 15-20mph breeze and we’re between -10° to 25°. This next wave will help start the heavy ice on the lake again. High temperatures range from the 20s on Sunday, to the single digits and lows on Tuesday. Then overnight lows range from the low and low 20s on Saturday night, to single digits to below zero overnight on Monday and Tuesday.
