The US Department of Justice this week filed a lawsuit against Walgreens, saying the company knowingly filled illegal prescriptions for no medical purpose, including opioids.
Walgreens is accused of filling millions of illegal prescriptions in violation of the Controlled Substances Act and attempting to obtain federal reimbursement for prescriptions through various federal health care programs in violation of the False Claims Act, according to a lawsuit filed nationwide in the US. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
“This lawsuit seeks to hold Walgreens accountable for years of failing to meet its obligations when dispensing dangerous opioids and other drugs,” said Chief Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brian M. Boynton, head of the Justice Department’s Civil Division, in a statement. .

The lawsuit alleges that the illegal prescription began in August 2012, and continues to this day.

In response, Walgreens said it needs to be clarified by the court.
