“Aphrodisiac honey” use is booming despite potential health risks, French transport officials warn

French transport officials said Monday that 31,000 tons of illegally imported honey said to be a natural aphrodisiac — but often tainted with drugs — were seized in the country last year.

Packets of honey and gels, sold as “shots” or “sticks” with names like Dark Horse or Bio Max, are often sold secretly in clubs and other nightlife venues.

The use of “aphrodisiac honey” has increased in recent years, as officials warn of potential health risks from ingredients not listed on labels.

“Since the amount of adulteration is unknown, and the doses used are not recommended or calculated, the consumer takes a great risk by consuming this type of adulterated honey,” said a statement from the French tax office.

They often contain chemical products such as sildenafil or tadalafil, the main ingredients in drugs for erectile dysfunction Viagra and Cialis, in France only available with a prescription.

Already in 2021, health authorities had warned of several cases where honey caused convulsions, cerebral edemas or severe kidney damage.

The French transport office said it seized 31,000 tons, mainly from countries including Malaysia, Turkey, Tunisia and Thailand.

“They arrive by sea, in bulk containers, or by express delivery, in small volumes, after being purchased online,” the office said.

The biggest find was made in the Mediterranean port of Marseille in November — 13 tons worth about 860,000 baht on a ship from Malaysia.

Last June, officials said officials in Lyon and Clermont-Ferrand seized nearly 25,000 doses of honey from a honey storage box.
