The Laken Riley Act will be one of the first bills to hit President Trump’s desk
The Laken Riley Act is expected to return to the House after the Senate is likely to pass an amended version Monday night.
The legislation is expected to be one of the first pieces of legislation sent to President Trump’s desk after overcoming the 60-vote filibuster limit twice this month.
The bill, introduced in the new Congress by Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., in the Senate and Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga., in the House, were named as the 22-year-old Augusta University student. who was found dead at the University of Georgia in February.

Jose Ibarra, a 26-year-old illegal immigrant, he was found guilty of 10 crimes in total, including murder. He initially pleaded not guilty but was eventually sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in November.
The measure would require ICE to arrest and detain illegal immigrants who commit theft, burglary or shoplifting until they are deported. States will also be given standing under the law to take civil action against members of the federal government who do not enforce immigration laws.

A Republican amendment that would add assaults on law enforcement officials to the list of crimes that would trigger ICE arrests was added last week to the Senate. The upper house will also vote Monday afternoon on whether to add “Sarah’s Law” as an amendment. Law, led by Sen. Rep. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, would require ICE to detain illegal immigrants charged with killing or seriously injuring another person.
The final vote on the immigration bill is expected around 6pm in the upper chamber.

After that, the House will need to speak on the measure again and approve the final version as amended by the Senate.
The prioritization of this bill before Trump’s inauguration on Monday occurred as the new president is expected to make immigration law a top priority of his administration.

The Trump administration has already revealed a number of measures it is taking on the first day of its term, many of which address immigration. White House officials indicated on Monday that he will sign an executive order ending the birthright of the children of illegal immigrants, in addition to several one-day measures to address the border crisis.
