The Padres brought back the lefty Austin Davis to a minor league contract, reports Robert Murray of FanSided. A KHG Sports Management client is returning to the organization after opting for free agency earlier in the season.
Davis played in seven games for the Friars last season. The 31-year-old (32 next month) gave up eight runs in seven innings. He walked five and struck out six. Davis had his best year with Triple-A El Paso. He worked 47 2/3 frames in the Pacific Coast League and managed a 3.40 ERA while striking out about 30% of opposing batters. His 12.5% walk percentage was scary, though that marked a significant step forward from last season. In 2023, he walked more than a quarter of a batter against Triple-A.
Clearly, Davis’ command is not a force. The lack of bat ability and solid minor league production is intriguing enough for San Diego to give him another chance. He will have an uphill battle to break the bullpen on opening day. The Padres have several left-handed relievers even after the loss Tanner Scott.
Last winter’s free agent signings Yuki Matsui again Wandy Peralta are back for their second season with the team. They will have it Adrian Morejon on the MLB roster in some way, though they left open the possibility of giving him a chance to enter an uncertain rotation beyond the top three Dylan Cease, Michael King again Yu Darvish.
