President Trump continued Monday to fire a Biden plan that allows immigrants fleeing four troubled countries to fly into the United States and stay in the country temporarily, part of a massive first-day immigration campaign.
This program, known as human parole and introduced by the Biden administration in early 2023, allowed immigrants from Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti and Venezuela to fly to the United States if they have financial sponsors and pass security checks. Migrants who come under this program can stay for two years, unless they find other ways to stay longer.
Since late last year, more than 500,000 immigrants have entered the country through this program.
This program, Mr. Trump has ordered the head of the Department of Homeland Security to end, serving as one of two major legislative moves by the Biden administration to try to stop immigrants from entering the country illegally. The Trump administration already moved earlier on Monday to shut down another program — a federal app that allows immigrants to schedule appointments to enter the country at official ports of entry.
“These processes – a safe and orderly way to reach the United States – have led to a significant reduction in the number of these people encountered at our southern border,” said Alejandro N. Mayorkas, Biden’s secretary of homeland security, last spring. “It is an important part of our efforts to deal with the unprecedented level of migration throughout our hemisphere.”
Republican lawmakers see this program as a way for immigrants who have no other way to get to the United States to enter the country for up to two years and get work permits.
“Here’s an idea: Don’t fly millions of illegal aliens from failed states thousands of miles away to small towns across the American Heartland,” said Stephen Miller, Mr.
Texas, along with other Republican-led states, sued to end the program and failed. But the Biden administration had said in October that it would allow immigration permits from the four countries to expire after their two-year term, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to find other ways to stay in the country or face deportation.
