CNN to lay off ‘hundreds’ of staff in first days of Trump’s second presidency: reports

CNN is reportedly laying off “hundreds” of employees in the first days of President Donald Trump’s administration.
Puck reported that CNN CEO Mark Thompson will announce to his staff about the network’s layoffs Thursday morning, and CNBC reported that the layoffs “will not affect CNN’s best-known names, who are under contract,” according to sources.
CNN did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Fox News Digital previously reported in November that CNN would face major layoffs in March and that the impact on the network would be “very significant.”

“I’m very sad and very frustrated,” the longtime CNN employee told Fox News Digital. “It’s a feeling that permeates the entire organization among those who have been around a long time and feel a strong connection to helping build the organization.”
“It’s time for a complete and total overhaul of the business model and chaos. It’s very difficult even under the best of circumstances,” said a CNN employee.

Another CNN employee quoted Thompson, who has been on the job for more than a year and has been open about how the company will have to make major changes to survive.
“I’m concerned because obviously the industry is in trouble… I’m sure there will be cuts,” a second CNN employee told Fox News Digital.

The employee alleged that “a lot of shows will be planned and produced in Atlanta” and that those most affected are the “expensive” shows produced in New York City.
CNN’s financial woes were laid bare last week after a judge found the network defamed a Navy veteran and ruled it could seek punitive damages. A legal dispute led to a settlement.

Forensic economist Robert W. Johnson, who was hired by the plaintiff’s attorney to examine CNN’s finances, found that CNN was worth $4.4 billion in 2021 but would drop to $2.3 billion in 2023, according to tax documents provided by the network.
Johnson’s data also showed that CNN’s revenue fell from $2.2 billion in 2021 to $1.8 billion in 2023. CNN’s revenue for the same period fell from $0.6 billion in 2021 to $0.4 billion in 2023.
