North Jersey agencies and individuals are alerting scammers to recognize the latest text of the alleged E-ZPPAS WAWS scam.
Bergen County Consumer News shared an example of the scam on Facebook Friday Morning. The message, part of a group chat sent from a phone number with a non-local area code, says the recipient has an unpaid invoice “to avoid excessive fines when the bill is due.”
The consumer news page exposed the message as a scam, noting that the heart and hand emojis contained in the official text will not be present in the official E-ZPAP message.
“The people who posted this are destroying your information. Do not click on the links,” the post read.
The Bloomfield Police Department shared a similar warning on Facebook Friday, urging the public to “think before you click.” IE-ZPass and other “popular” ones like Amazon, PSE&G and credit card providers will not send a message asking for payment or personal information, the department said.
Some Facebook users provided screenshots of hoax messages claiming to owe $6.99 to E-ZPass. Documents containing links to websites that are not the actual e-Zpass address, which for New Jersey customers is wilezpassj.com.
Anyone who clicks on a link or information provided in these text messages must protect their financial accounts. Contact your bank or credit card company to dispute any unknown charges.
