Person missing after car crashes through ice on Yukon’s Lake Laberge: RCMP

Whitehorse RCMP are searching for a vehicle that went over the ice on Yukon’s Lake Laberge early Saturday morning, with one person still believed to be inside.

The police were first informed that the car went through the ice around 01:00 on Saturday, when a group of people were ice fishing in the lake, RCMP said in a news release.

Three people were in the car when it sank, police said. Two people managed to get out to safety, but the third person has not been found.

“Police are continuing to investigate this tragic incident with the assistance of the Yukon Coroner’s Service,” the release said.

Police said the investigation would involve a “difficult and lengthy process of recovery.” The British Columbia RCMP’s Underwater Recovery Team will assist in the operation, which is expected to take several days.

Police are asking people to avoid Lake Laberge while investigators work.
