Trump imposes 25% tariffs on Colombia as deported migrant flights are denied

US President Donald Trump has said he will impose 25% tariffs on Colombia after its President blocked two US military planes carrying migrants from entering the country.

Trump said emergency tariffs on “all goods” coming to the US from Colombia would be put in place “immediately”, and in a week the 25% tariff would be raised to 50%.

Earlier, Colombian President Gustavo Petroer said on Sunday that he denied the entry of American military planes carrying migrants into Colombian soil.

Petro said that he would find the citizens who are with us in the ears of the city, without treating them like criminals “and he said that they are not migrants” and said that the migrants should be returned “with dignity and respect”.

American authorities told the US partner of the USBC, CBS News, that two military planes from San Diego were due to land in Colombia on Sunday, but those plans were canceled due to problems.

In response, Trump announced “immediate and decisive measures to retaliate” against the post office. He said the US would end the travel ban and “visa reimposition” of the Colombian government, as well as its allies and supporters.

Trump also said that there will be visa restrictions for supporters of the Colombian government, and to improve customs and border protection “for all Colombian nationals and luggage for national security reasons”.

“It’s just that, these measures,” said Trump, saying that his administration will not accept that the Colombian Government has “violated its legal obligations regarding the reception and return of criminals who have been forced into the United States”.

The US relies on nearly 20% of its coffee – worth about $2bn – from Colombia, as well as other goods such as bananas, crude oil, avocados and flowers.

Tariffs will make imports more expensive which – if passed on to the consumer – could mean higher coffee prices.

The destruction of the Colombian government and its supporters, as well as the rupture in the political relations that sign, are very important.

Trump’s own choice for Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau indicated that “working with other countries to stop the permanent flow” must be “very important to the policy.”

Tens of thousands of migrants every year from all over the world, from India to China, head towards the US after arriving in Colombia, often boarding groups in Colombia.

This uncertainty could make it difficult for the Trump administration to work with Colombia to stop this.

And on Sunday, Petro said more than 15,666 Americans were in Colombia illegally – a figure the BBC could not independently verify.

Petro said that unlike the Trump Administration, he would ‘not’ be seen to be doing anything wrong to bring back illegal immigrants to the United States.

The incident between the two nations comes as the Trump administration has vowed to implement “deportation”. The President signed several Executive Orders related to immigration on his first day in office.

Some of Trump’s major orders have been signed with the aim of increasing immigration and the power of Ice) to arrest and detain illegal immigrants on US soil.

White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavett said 538 arrests were made on Thursday alone.

For comparison, snow arrested more than 149,700 people in the fiscal year 2024 under the management of the bid, which is equivalent to an average of 409 per day.

Trump declared a national emergency on the border of Mexico, the administration denied the right to citizenship to the children of the children of the US illegally or with his first visas and re-use them in his place.
