Heavy, localized showers possible in the LA area through Monday

Although the rains are expected to taper off Sunday evening into Monday, the risk of flash floods and mudslides will continue through Monday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The center of the storm is expected to pass through LA County on Monday, creating a risk of heavy, localized rain throughout the day. Ahead of the storm, the National Weather Service issued flash flood watches for the Palisades, Eaton, Hughes, Franklin and Bridge fires.

Heavy rain — more than half an inch per hour — can wreak havoc on burned areas, increasing the likelihood of flash floods and landslides caused by fire water.

At City Hall Sunday, officials told those affected by the Palisades fire that the Department of Public Works deployed 15,000 K-rail barriers and 50,000 sandbags in the burned area to protect buildings and the environment. The Los Angeles Fire Department was working to clear debris from Palisades Drive Sunday evening.

Flood watches will expire at 4pm on Monday.

Rainfall across the region has been highly variable, with parts of Los Angeles receiving more than an inch of rain by 7pm Sunday and other areas receiving less than a tenth of that, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service station at Eaton Dam, near the Eaton burn scar, recorded 0.13 inches of rain. The Monte Nido station — in the Santa Monica Mountains near the Palisades fire scar — recorded 0.55 of an inch.

Mountains in Greater Los Angeles it had received 1 to 5 snow Sunday morning, a spokesperson for the National Weather Service said the Oxnard office was aware of reports on social media of hail near Ventura.
