Tennessee Lawmaker Rewtroduces BilltroDodues Bill to Allow Veterans, Retired Police Officers to Work as School Service Cehilers

The Tennessee State LawMaker is also raising a legislative term bill in 2025 that would look to fill the resource officer shortage by allowing veterans and retired law enforcement officers to be hired.

Republican Rep. Tim Rudd renewed the bill for the 2025 legislative session. It was passed by the House during the last legislative session, but failed to make it through the Senate.

The bill would allow Screet Charter schools to hire veterans and retired law enforcement officers to serve as school resource managers.

Applicants must complete 40 hours of basic school policy training, pass a test to be eligible to purchase and obtain a written permit, obtain a school-issue firearm, complete an FBI background check and pass an FBI criminal history check.

“They still have to go through training. The reason is to try to get more resource officers in these rural areas, especially so we can protect our children,” Rudd told WTVC.

“This will not solve the shortage problem, but it will help,” he added. Ultimately, it would be up to the school system whether they want to use them, and what guidelines they put in them. “

Rudd says the proposal will help veterans and retired law enforcement officers, but more importantly it will protect children.

A man who served in the Navy for more than 20 years said the measure could be an opportunity for veterans to find renewed purpose and be role models for students.

“They have all the skills that they will need to bring to the school environment as a resource officer,” Mikinkem McCamish told WTVC.

The transition from military life to military life can be difficult for some, but McCamish says these people will be good role models for students.

“There can be no better right than to have veterans as role models for students in this situation of equipment or just to be a part of the life of the school,” he said.
