AFTER a successful one-night concert in 2022, six Filipino rock songwriters reunited for another concert.
They first met for TANAWAcel Bisa, Aia de Leon, Barbie Almalbis, Kitchie Nadal, Lougee Basabas, and Hannah Romawac join the official lineup Tanaw: The Repeat the concert. Six OPM icons share the stage of the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Pasay City on Feb. 9.
These women have been collectively shaping the Pinoy rock scene for decades, with careers spanning some of the top bands of the 1990s and beyond as well as their solo careers. They now form the Tanaw Collective. As a larger group, they hope to explore “collaborative music releases, live concerts, and other creative projects that amplify the voices of women in the music industry.”
They will release their first official single, “Landslide,” on Jan. 31. A stripped-down, fun reimagining of the Fleetwood Mac classic, the song was recorded by the artists themselves and mixed by Angee Rozul.

To Ms. De Leon, their collaboration was the result of jumping into each other’s houses, and not a strict schedule or deadline as it was in the early days of their career.
“We are not the breadwinners. We understand the silence, the spaces in between. We are mothers now. And we have our rallies,” he said at a press conference on January 22.
“Important things don’t always get noticed,” he added, reflecting on his time as lead singer and guitarist for Imago. “What stands out is false, moving from one place to another at high speed.”
Ms. Romawac, known as sessiOnroad’s vocalist and guitarist, said the six formed a group that was a natural step to “feel part of the art of music.”
He explained that they are “there for friendship,” and a place to be creative. “It’s a pool where everyone can dive.”
“We really support each other. When we release music individually, we comment and promote each other’s work,” added Ms. Bisa, a former Moonstar88 singer.
Back in October, he held a farewell concert alongside the launch of his solo album – as a last hurray before he moves to the Netherlands later in February.
“I already have a [plane] ticket,” said Ms. Bisa. “These girls pushed each other Tanaw. They said we should have one before I left, so I pushed mine the plane until a week after the concert.”

To Ms. Basabas, who was the singer of Mojoflyfans can expect exciting arrangements of their favorite songs and new ones, with Manila String Machine providing an orchestral twist.
In their rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide,” he said they often feel sad while singing the song: “But time makes you brave / Even kids grow up / And I grow up.”
Despite their sad old age, these six are still excited about today’s local music. Among the young female artists they hope to collaborate with are dwta, Ena Mori, syd hartha, Keiko Necesario, and Clara Benin.
The title of their concerts and their collection, TANAW (translates to “watch”), it shows how they intend to serve a dual purpose: to remind, and to look forward.
Ms. Almalbis recalled that when they were just starting out, it was not common for girls to carry guitars when they went to school and to dance like boys did, something they are proud to see has changed.
“When we all started writing songs when we were young, it wasn’t a means to an end. We didn’t want to be famous. We just wanted to make music. Suddenly it became a job,” he said.
“We always go back to the reason we made music in the first place – because we love it so much.”
