Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, architect of important economic reforms in India, dies at the age of 92.
Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh died on Thursday, December 26, at the age of 92. He had been in poor health for the past few months and is survived by his wife, Gurcharan Kaur Singh, and three daughters.
“With deep sorrow, we announce the passing away of former Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92,” according to an official statement from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in the national capital, where he was admitted.
Dr Singh was being treated for age-related health conditions and collapsed at his residence on December 26, the hospital said in a statement. “Resuscitation measures were immediately started at home. He was brought to the medical emergency at AIIMS, New Delhi, at 8:06 pm. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was pronounced dead at 9:51 pm,” the statement said. said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the demise of Dr Singh. “From humble beginnings, Manmohan Singh rose to become a respected economist,” said Prime Minister Modi.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and her mother Sonia Gandhi reached the hospital when they heard about her hospitalization.
Dr. Singh is widely recognized as the main architect of the important economic reforms of the country in 1991.
He was credited with rescuing the economy from the brink of bankruptcy.
He started an era of economic liberalization, which is believed to have changed the country’s economy.
He served as Prime Minister for two terms in the Congress-led UPA government from 2004 to 2014.
He also served as Finance Minister under the then Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao.
