Barcelona gave Real Madrid the latest El Clasico by hammering home the Supercopa | Football news

Barcelona beat rivals Real Madrid 5-2 in the Spanish Super Cup Clasico final in Saudi Arabia on Sunday to win the first trophy of the Hansi Flick era.

Kylian Mbappe put Madrid ahead, but a dominant Barcelona hit five in reply before their goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was sent off in the second half.

Madrid were hoping to avenge their 4-0 home defeat to Barcelona in October in the LaLiga Clasico but were instead left battered and bruised by their rivals in Jeddah.

After Mbappe’s opener, Lamine Yamal equalized and Robert Lewandowski sent Barcelona ahead in the penalty area, with Raphinha grabbing a brace and Alejandro Balde also on target.

Rodrygo Goes pulled one back for Madrid with a free-kick but they could not capitalize on their advantage in numbers in a humiliating defeat for the European champions.

“It’s really nice, the season is over and we won the cup. It’s always special and, moreover, in the Clasico against Real Madrid,” Barcelona defender Jules Kounde told Movistar.

“We were calm and patient, knowing that if we use this plan we will win.

“I’m proud and happy for the team… right after the red card, we got together and said we’ll have to suffer, sit down, but we’ve had a lot of good and this won’t escape us.”

‘Bad defending’ cost Real Madrid the game

The coach of Real Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti, said that the poor defense of the team is the reason for the heavy defeat.

“We defended badly and that cost us the game – they scored their goals easily,” Ancelotti told Movistar.

“We’re sad, like all our fans, it’s disappointing, and we can’t hide that… we have to look forward, there’s nothing we can do.”

Both coaches chose to keep the same line-up they started with in the semi-finals.

Yamal gave Madrid an early warning with a curling effort from the right which forced Thibaut Courtois into a save.

The Belgian keeper also made a strong stop to keep out Raphinha’s cross after the Brazilian made an easy save from Lucas Vazquez.

Although Barcelona opened the salvo, it was Real Madrid who took the lead in the fifth minute with Mbappe’s amazing counterattack goal.

The French striker, repeatedly frustrated by the offside flag in the league defeat by the Catalans, dribbled on the halfway line after Vinicius got the ball back and, after breaking through the area, slotted past Szczesny.

Barcelona come back from a goal down

It took a stunning individual goal from 17-year-old Yamal to level the scoreline, the Spanish midfielder cutting in from the right before firing a low shot inside the near post in the same manner as former Barca player Lionel Messi, too. you are often compared.

Barcelona continued to push and took the lead through Lewandowski’s penalty after Eduardo Camavinga came on late and tackled Gavi carelessly.

Raphinha quickly added Barcelona’s third by heading Kounde’s ball from deep, and they grabbed the fourth before the break.

Yamal and Raphinha combined and the latter slipped to Balde, who slotted past Courtois.

Barcelona continued with the same game after the break and Raphinha closed the fifth net with a good drive and finished after Marc Casado played him in the middle.

The Catalans were reduced to 10 men when Mbappe came in at the other end, rounded goalkeeper Szczesny, who brought him down outside the area again after VAR was overturned.

Rodrygo, who scored earlier, fired a free kick past Szczesny’s Inaki Pena.

Bellingham and Mbappe left Real Madrid and went to Madrid

Mbappe charged Jude Bellingham but the Englishman was denied by a good challenge from Kounde in stoppage time.

The French striker came close to scoring again in a fine display but Pena’s effort was blocked.

“He was the best [Madrid player],” said Ancelotti, seeing an improvement after Mbappe settled into life at the club, following his departure from Paris Saint-Germain.

Barcelona have signed midfielder Dani Olmo for the first time since signing for the club on a short-term deal, a controversial move that overshadowed the semi-final earlier in the week.

However, their five-star display provided plenty of other talking points as Barca won a record-extending 15th Spanish Super Cup.
