The US must win the AI race as China gains power: ‘The lead is not as big as it used to be,’ warns OpenAI boss.
OpenAI’s Chris Lehane warns of a waning US lead in the artificial intelligence space as the company releases an economic blueprint and US policy proposals.
During an appearance on “Varney & Co.,” Monday, Lekane, OpenAI’s vice president of global affairs, argued that the US must “completely succeed” in the AI space, highlighting key components listed in the company’s newly unveiled blueprint.
“We have a lead. That lead is not as big as it was compared to China,” he said.
On Monday, OpenAI announced its AI in America: OpenAI’s Economic Blueprint, which focuses on AI in national security, the “critical role” of the government in “maximizing the benefits of AI from the beginning” and infrastructure.

Lekane explained that the plan will not only help protect America’s lead in the race but also support “the economic opportunity the country can find” in technology.
“At the federal government level, can we have a clear direction, a unified strategy when it comes to national security?” he stopped.
He went on to add how the country can use AI to lead at the government level.
“States can be democratic laboratories to rely on and benefit from what this technology can do,” said Lekane.

“There are many discussions about how we grow talent in this country. Countries can play a big role in that,” he said.
Finally, the last piece listed in the blueprint is infrastructure.
“People said infrastructure is the end. We need chips. We need data. We need power,” he emphasized.
The blueprint’s text echoes Lehane’s comments, saying “we believe that building an adequate infrastructure is not only important to ensure that AI worldwide is US-based instead of China-based technology – it is an undeniable opportunity to spur US industrial renaissance.”
“You know, Vladimir Putin, who is not someone I can quote, said that whoever wins the match between the US and China wins the world,” said Lekane.
He explained that China “did it [it] clearly” that they want to be the dominant player in AI by 2030 and that during the last 4 or 5 weeks, AI programs coming out of the country “show that they have really accelerated their progress.”
“We are here now, if we look at the race we are in, which we have to win, I believe we will win. But to make sure we win, we have to think big, we need to do big things, and we need to build big. This country has done that before,” said Lehane.
As the US prepares for new leadership, Lehane expressed excitement about working with President-elect Trump.
“President-elect Trump did [it] really make clear his vision for AI to make sure that America wins in the national security arena and wins in the economic competition,” he explained.
“We understand that as a leading innovator in this space, we must be a part of that and make it clear that we want to support him to achieve his goals,” he said.
