It seems like Pete Alonso Queens time is running out. SNY’s Andy Martino reported this afternoon that the Mets expect Alonso to sign elsewhere and have started turning their attention to other things.
After initially dealing with the gap in contract length, the parties have recently turned their attention to a short-term plan. Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic reported this afternoon that Alonso and his representatives at the Boras Corporation have offered the Mets a three-year contract with a maximum annual salary and one or more opt-outs. Rosenthal and Sammon report that the team is opposed to the three-year offer that Alonso rejected.
Joel Sherman and Dan Martin of The New York Post reported that the team’s offer came with a total guarantee in the $68-70MM range, which Alonso found unsatisfactory. According to Sherman and Martin, the Mets’ proposal included an exit.
That offer was clearly not to Alonso’s liking. Now it looks like he’ll be moving on, although the Mets haven’t moved all their chips to another point just yet. New York agreed to return Jesse Winker for a $7.5MM deal. He will come in as a pick and/or as a left bencher. If Alonso really goes, New York will probably go Mark Vientos first base and allow Brett Baty, Ronny Mauricio again Luisangel Acuna a battle of reps at third base.
Jon Heyman of The Post writes that the Mets are now “very focused” on adding to the bullpen. Samson bound them to a high release agent Tanner Scott last week. Adds a high-level arm in front of the star nearby Edwin Díaz make sense. A left-handed person would be an obvious fit to consider Danny Young he’s the only southpaw in the bullpen right now. Scott is much more of a matchup option, but he has proven that he can attack the best lefties in the sport.
