Two of Iran’s top judges have been shot dead at the country’s highest court, state media reported.
The judges news website, Mizan, said judges Ali Razini and Mohammad Moghiseh were killed after an armed man entered the court, in the capital Tehran, on Saturday morning.
The victim is said to have killed himself when he fled the scene. It is reported that a security guard was also injured in the attack.
The motive for the attack is unclear, but both judges are said to have been involved in the persecution and execution of opponents of the Islamic State during the 1980s and 1990s.
In a statement carried by the state news agency, IRNA, the justice affairs office described the attack as a planned killing.
It also said that, according to the first findings, the attacker was not involved in any case being considered by the high court, and an investigation has been started to find and arrest other people who may be involved in the attack.
The spokesman for the judges, Asghar Jahangir, told Iranian state TV that the attacker entered the court with a gun before opening fire.
One of the judges, Razini, survived when he tried to be nominated in 1998.
One, Moghiseh, was like that approved by the US in 2019and the treasury department accuses him of “supervising a number of unjust cases, where the cases were not verified and the evidence was ignored”.
At the time, he was a judge at the Tehran Revolutionary Court. It is reported that he was summoned to the high court in 2020.
Moghiseh was also among seven Iranian judges sentenced by Canada in 2023 for what the country described as “their role in gross and systematic human rights violations”.
